Zootrope

During the nineteenth century it became important to study the peculiarities of the human eye and found that if 16 images of a movement that takes place in a second are passed on also on a second, the persistence of vision unites them and makes them look like a single moving image. This discovery about the persistence of the retina, which it maintains, through a complicated neurological process and for a split of second , the image that passes in front, led first to its demonstration using the thaumatrope finally arriving to invent the zoetrope.

The word Zoetrope comes from the Greek Zoo (live) and trope (rotating). The zootrope or daedalum was invented in 1834 by George William Horner English, consists of a series of printed patterns on paper strips placed inside a rotating drum mounted on a shaft. In the middle of the cylinder, a series of vertical slots.Turning the unit and look through the slots seems that the images come alive

This zoetrope is a recreation of fabricated in the nineteenth century. It is decorated with art deco motifs and comes with 30 different animations, playing those made at that time.

It is accompanied by a small booklet with its history and instructions.
